wash

Ain't just the Firefly guy.
I tried to be an adult and get a physical, but I was thwarted in about 9 different ways. Damn it all.

So you know the Emmy nods have been announced. People who've seen The Wire are irked it got snubbed for the billionth time, but I with the lack of HBO or Netflix in my world will have to be content to feel sad about the FNL and BBT snubs. Sad not surprised.

However, Bryan Cranston more than deserves his nod. More than. So that's great.

Am looking forward to third installment of Dr. Horrible tonight. Will probably go online around 9pm tonight Pacific Coast time.

Won some HBO first season DVDs. So that's what was in Sun Valley. Nice, but still annoying to have to go there twice.

Can't see The Dark Knight yet. Too dark for me and Heath Ledger's passing is still raw.

Charlie Wilson's War

So, you're probably wondering, does Tom Hanks redeem himself after doing The Da Vinci Code? Does Aaron Sorkin redeem himself after Studio 60? Does Philip Seymour Hoffman continue to rock our argyle socks off? Is Emily Blunt's unnatural Southern tan (not to mention accent) distracting but not in a totally bad way?
The answer to all of the above is a resounding "You betcha."

But Julia Roberts is smugly herself in a role that doesn't ask for anything more. And the weird battle scenes are a mixture of yesterday's footage and some really odd video game massacre tech.

Aaron Sorkin provided some wise words tonight. Put two people together and have them argue. You'll be in a good place. Not a bad idea to have Bill Goldman be your mentor either (recognize, I'm only calling him Bill because Sorkin did, not because I'm disrespectful).

Also, you can (almost) always park on Genesee.

The Coast of U-going-to-sleep

So I didn't see any NY theater this year other than The Coast of Utopia, but I promise you, it wasn't enjoyable. Billy Crudup is genius, so yes I'm thrilled beyond words or even grunting sounds that he won, but Jennifer Ehle? Slightly less shrill than her fellow castmates and overdramatic in several interchangeable female roles that she couldn't have done much with anyhow. Directing? Puh-lease. The play, particularly parts two and hree, were well-choreographed but everything else was dull, dull, annoying, grating, and dull. When Billy Crudup's character died, I spent the rest of part two hoping the theatre would burst into flames. And during number 3, I chastised myself for continuing the self-flagellation of watching Stoppard's "I read a bunch of Russian history/philosophy books and then mangled them in with some pseudo-romance trash to give you a migraine for 9 hours"...

Anyhow. Hoorah for Billy.

Rented the British mockumentary Confetti the other night, which stars Martin Freeman, from the original The Office and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. If you'd like a softer, Britisher version of Christopher Guest's mockumentaries, this might be to your taste. I liked it. It's a small inconsequential thing, but the poor bloke who plays the tennis wedding husband is pretty great at being both sympathetic and despicable at the same time. Should get a BAFTA for it.
In summing up, I wish I had some kind of affirmative message to leave you with. I don't. Would you take two negative messages?
